March 2010 - Completion of Shipcote Baths
John Flowers Ltd has just completed the re-roofing of Shipcote Baths as part of Gateshead Council’s ‘Building an Active Future for Gateshead’ programme.
Willmott Dixon has been brought in to work with the council on its programme, which will see them design and build a series of brand new facilities as well as refurbish existing leisure facilities in Gateshead in time for the excitement surrounding the 2012 London Olympics.
Gateshead Council’s swimming pools were all built over 25 years ago, with the
pool at Gateshead Leisure Centre claiming to have the longest history having been built as the Shipcote Pool in 1941.
Having been on Gateshead Council’s tender list for many years, John Flowers Ltd were appointed to carry out these works as part of the council’s largest investment ever undertaken in leisure facilities.
The works undertaken by us involved stripping the existing roof coverings, applying IKO’s Firebloc vapour control to a pre-prepared deck, under 100mm laminated insulation boards fixed with Fastflow adhesive. The waterproof layers were IKO’s Superbase and Ultraprevent black mineral cap sheet and both layers were torch applied.
John Kerry and Steven Gales, our built-up felt roofing master craftsmen said “Due to the nature of this project in terms of the age of the building, the existing glass roof and the unusual shape of the roof, this was one of the most challenging jobs we have undertaken to date.”
